UIW Mission


Position Summary
The Clinical Counselor provides counseling services for the Behavioral Health Services at all University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) campuses. This position is responsible for providing individual, family, couples, and group counseling; crisis assessment/intervention and psychoeducational presentations; and counseling and referral services to employees when needed. The Clinical Counselor reports to the Director of Behavioral Health Services.

Essential Functions


Job Duties


Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated proficiency and strong knowledge of all professional ethical guidelines, including the maintenance of confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA/ FERPA/insurance and other university federal and state requirements.
  • Strong knowledge in a variety of evidenced based and brief counseling modalities.
  • Proficiency of assessment and treatment planning.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in providing counseling to culturally diverse populations with a variety of life challenges/diagnoses, including children and adults, military populations, survivors of violence/ sexual assault, and international clients.
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively with team members, and as a part of a multi-disciplinary team; must be able to work in conjunction with behavioral health interns working towards graduation or licensure.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in ability to manage conflict.
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively; excellent interpersonal, written, oral/presentation skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong computers skills to include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access), social media, and providing on-line counseling.
  • Ability to participate in professional development opportunities and continuing education to maintain licensure.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of community resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to practice cultural competence and proficiency with crisis intervention.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.


Required Education
Master's Degree in Counseling or related field, such as Social Work. Note that LPC Associate will be considered.

Required Work Experience
Minimum one (1) year of clinical counseling experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual (Spanish).
  • Counseling experience in higher education/health care setting.
  • Doctorate in Counseling or related field.


Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
  • Current or eligible for Texas Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or current Texas Licensed Social Worker (LCSW) OR Texas LPC Associate. Note that as a licensed clinician (LPC or LCSW), the employee is expected to participate in professional development opportunities and continuing education to maintain licensure.
  • Must hold a valid driver license, must be at least 21 years of age, and have driving record insurable by UIW insurance carrier to be able to drive to different UIW campuses as needed.


Work Hours
Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm with extended hours as needed to meet departmental goals, to include occasional weekend or evening work for special events.

Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift up to 20lbs of office supplies, as well as reach overhead, bend, squat to retrieve office materials.
  • Ability to actively engage in events for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to regularly move about campus and event venues to actively engage faculty, staff, and potential/current students, as well as attend meetings on and off campus.
